FLAMBÉ

OVERVIEW

Known as the Farm to Fork Capital, Sacramento’s food scene has been blazing in recent years. To highlight the city’s growth and its unique gems, the quarterly magazine Flambé celebrates the dazzling culinary scene from affordable dining options to Michelin Star restaurants, your next Cup of Joe, or the perfect night out with friends. This dynamic city and what it has to offer is something we want to celebrate and share the pride with our fellow, native Sacramentonians, as well as opening our arms to our growing community through Flambé.

Not Just Another Food Magazine

To develop the meaning of Flambé and what it will bring to readers, research was poured into the zine target audience and competitors to understand what they are looking for. Working closely with peers Aaron Bellici, Melanie Martinez, Darlyn Cristobal, and Mayra Meza, we crafted the position that Flambé takes – a vehicle to showcase the upcoming culinary scene in Sacramento to foster a sense of pride.
In collaboration, we each crafted articles capturing the organic, local Sacramento community to coffee, late night spots, and affordable eats. To illustrate and capture the audience, we took photographs in an editorial style that is casual yet highly professional.

Creating a Visual Narrative

After cementing the core meaning of Flambé and collecting assets, it was time to bring the magazine to life. Through iterations of thumbnails and exploration of laying out each article and how to display the images, I was able to come to the solution of playing with type and crafting unique systems correlating to each article. Through this, I was able to develop a visual narrative of each article.
